Fall 2020 Commencement FAQs

We know you have lots of questions about Fall 2020 commencement ceremonies and we are adding to the list as questions arise. Note: On Nov. 10, 2020, UNT announced the consolidation of two in-person commencement ceremonies into one university-wide Fall 2020 Commencement event for 1 p.m. Nov. 22, 2020 at Apogee Stadium.UNT will host virtual College Recognition Ceremonies on Dec. 11 and 12 when graduate names will be called out loud and displayed one at a time on screen.

Questions about College Recognition Ceremonies

What elements will be included in the virtual College Recognition Ceremonies?

In addition to dean’s remarks, each graduate’s name will be read out loud and displayed on the screen, along with degree granted and Latin Honors, if applicable.

How can I make sure the announcer pronounces my name correctly?

Students who have applied for graduation receive an email detailing the process to submit phonetic name pronunciation. Submissions were due Nov. 9.

Questions about Regalia

Should I buy regalia and if so, how?

UNT approved regalia was required for all graduates who participated in the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium. Learn more about purchasing or renting regalia. What is the return date for regalia rentals and how do I return rented regalia?

Rental doctoral regalia is rented for two-week periods only, with exceptions made for candidates attending both the in-person November ceremony and the December virtual ceremonies, in which case regalia will need to be returned by Dec. 14.

Can someone else order my regalia for me?

Anyone can come in to the store to make the purchase for a student but will need to provide the student’s height, degree and major when ordering.

Can I still buy a class ring?

Class rings can be purchased on the Josten's website and shipped to you. In person sales are planned to resume at the UNT Barnes & Noble store this fall.

What elements were included in the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

Remarks from the president, provost and UNT Alumni Association and the ceremonial conferral of degrees.

Were graduates from previous semesters allowed to attend the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

The Nov. 22 commencement ceremony was for Fall 2020 graduates only. UNT is committed to honoring graduates with safe, accessible, quality virtual and in-person events. Once event and venue capacity restrictions are lifted, those who missed the opportunity to cross the stage may be able to participate in a future ceremony.

What was the inclement weather plan for the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

In light rain, the ceremony was planned to take place as scheduled. Fortunately, the light rain that was predicted didn't materialize and the ceremony went on in dry, though windy and chilly, conditions.

Did graduates cross the stage during the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

To ensure proper social distancing is observed, graduates remained in their ticketed seats for the duration of the ceremony. Individual recognition of graduates will take place Dec. 11-12 during virtual College Recognition Ceremonies.

Were face masks required at the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

Yes. UNT requires the use of face coverings in public settings, even at outdoor venues like Apogee Stadium.

Why were tickets required for the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

Capacity was limited to allow for proper social distancing and to provide graduates and their guests a safe, accessible and quality experience.

How did graduates request disability accommodations for the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

Graduates were able to request reasonable accommodations for themselves and/or their guests as part of the RSVP process.

Did the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium include an American Sign Language interpreter?

Yes, graduates indicated on their RSVP if they or their guests needed to be seated close to the ASL interpreter.

Is the live stream from the Nov. 22 commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium be posted online?

Yes. The ceremony video was immediately available for on-demand viewing.

May I come on campus to take photos?

Yes. Remember, UNT requires the use of face coverings by all community members and visitors inside buildings and in public settings outside.

How did graduates RSVP for the commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

During the week of Oct. 26, detailed RSVP instructions were emailed to all students who are on track to graduate in Fall 2020. The RSVP link was not be posted online, as only Fall 2020 graduates could claim tickets. Learn how to check your graduation status and watch your official UNT email frequently for commencement updates. RSVPs were due Monday, Nov. 9.

When were graduates supposed to RSVP for commencement ceremony at Apogee Stadium?

Students who have applied for Fall 2020 graduation and who have been approved to graduate should have received an email the week of Oct. 26 with instructions on how to RSVP. RSVPs were due Monday, Nov. 9.

Where did graduates park?

Limited graduate parking was available in the Blue Lot southeast of Apogee Stadium. Guests were encouraged to carpool with their graduate.

Where did guests park?

If guests were unable to carpool with their graduate, guest parking was available in the Orange Lot, north of Apogee Stadium and Interstate 35.

Was special needs parking available?

Yes, all graduates and guests with ADA placards and/or special needs were allowed to park in the Black Lot by entering off the Interstate 35 service road.

Were parking passes required?

No, parking was on a first-come, first-served basis.

Was there a charge for parking for this event?

No, there was no charge for parking.

When did the stadium open?

Apogee Stadium opened one hour prior to the ceremony's start.
